Gregg Araki’s latest is the rare movie where the detectives are Johnny Knoxville and Margaret Cho, which tells you how seriously it takes itself. Not very, and that’s mostly the point. Cooper Hoffman plays Elliot Bell, a broke young guy crashing with his best friend Apple until the famous contemporary artist Erika Tracy hires him as a studio assistant. Olivia Wilde plays Erika as a glamorous, controlling provocateur who treats everyone around her as material for her next show, and Elliot gets pulled into her glossy, self-obsessed world. Critics loved the two leads, and they’re right. Wilde is fearless and funny, and Hoffman makes Elliot’s slow realization that he’s being used both awkward and sad. Daveed Diggs is sly as Erika’s business manager. The art-world satire goes after easy targets, though, and the crime story framing it is thin. It holds a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 6.0 because the leads are terrific and the jabs land softer than the film thinks. $2,268 says you visit a gallery this year and squint suspiciously at whoever is working the front desk.
What works: Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman are terrific together, and Araki’s glossy style makes the art-world satire fun to look at.
What doesn’t: The art-world jokes hit easy targets, and the detective story wrapped around them is too thin to build real suspense.
Who it’s for: Adult fans of Gregg Araki and glossy, prickly satire. This one is strictly for grown-ups.
After a disastrous gallery opening, Erika vanishes and the detectives suspect Elliot was behind it. She turns up fine: she and her business manager staged the whole disappearance to rescue her failing studio, and the scandal sells out her show. Years later Elliot is a successful podcaster, interviewing her about her book on the hoax.
Gregg Araki is back with a provocative art-world story set in Los Angeles. Elliot Bell (Cooper Hoffman) is a young guy who lands a job as the assistant to Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), a famous contemporary artist who never met a boundary she didn't want to push. Working in her studio pulls him into a scene that's glossy, strange and very full of itself, and the satire lands on all of it. Chase Sui Wonders, Charli XCX and Daveed Diggs fill out the circle, and somehow Johnny Knoxville and Margaret Cho show up as detectives. Ninety minutes, high gloss, sharp elbows.
Gallery regulars, studio assistants, and anyone who has ever had a famously difficult boss.
