The best idea in In the Grey is that the scariest people alive are debt collectors, and the movie never does anything surprising with it. Eiza González plays Rachel Wild, a lawyer who recovers money for rich clients, and Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal are Sid and Bronco, her two off-the-books fixers. The job is squeezing a billionaire who owes a billion and runs his own Spanish island. The squeezing is fun for a while: stalled construction, a crippled oil rig, a bugged office, an impounded jet and yacht. Sid even gets himself jailed just to scout the police station, peak Cavill. Then it becomes a long shootout movie, booby-trapped banana plantation and all, with every beat borrowed from a better Guy Ritchie film. Rosamund Pike is wasted as a finance executive. It made $28.4 million worldwide on a reported $70M. A 4.4 because the stars are charming and the plan is stale. $850.21 says you finally pay back the friend who spotted you lunch last month, just in case they know a guy like Bronco.
What works: Cavill and Gyllenhaal are loose and funny together, and the early sabotage stretch has a fun, nasty precision.
What doesn’t: Once the plan turns into shootouts, it’s a pile of familiar Ritchie moves with no fresh ideas and very little tension.
Who it’s for: Guy Ritchie completists and anyone who just wants Cavill and Gyllenhaal trading smirks for an evening.
Salazar pays up, then kidnaps Rachel months later, and Sid and Bronco break her out across the island. They deliver Salazar to Miami locked in a shipping container, and Rachel, realizing Bobby double-crossed her, leaves her to face the fallout.
Rachel Wild (Eiza González) is a lawyer who collects debts for very rich clients, and she does not lose. Her secret weapons are two off-the-books operators, Sid (Henry Cavill) and Bronco Beauregard (Jake Gyllenhaal). The new job: billionaire Manny Salazar (Carlos Bardem) owes a billion dollars and runs his own Spanish island like he never has to pay it back. Rachel cuts a deal with finance executive Bobby Sheen (Rosamund Pike) to recover it herself, then sends her two guys in to wreck Salazar's projects with bribes and tricks. Guy Ritchie directs. Ninety-seven minutes, collected in full.
People who read the fine print. Salazar clearly did not.
