George R. R. Martin wrote the short story, Paul W. S. Anderson stretched In the Lost Lands into a feature, and the stretch marks show in every murky frame. The visuals are so dim and smeary you’ll want to wipe your screen. Milla Jovovich plays Gray Alys, a witch who deals in illusions and never says no to a job, so when the Queen wants a werewolf’s power by the next full moon, off she goes. A palace official secretly pays her to fail, a great wrinkle the movie barely uses. Dave Bautista’s Boyce tags along as her guide, and their gruff banter has all the spark of wet firewood. A spell cast through a sniper scope is bonkers in the good way. Critics called it an incoherent eyesore, with a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it made $6.53 million worldwide on a reported $55M. A 2.6 because two charismatic leads can’t light up a movie this dim. $600.16 says you spend the last half hour rooting for the werewolf and don’t feel bad about it.
What works: Jovovich and Bautista bring some leftover charisma, and a couple of moments, like a spell cast through a sniper scope, are fun in a bonkers way.
What doesn’t: The murky, washed-out visuals are a chore to look at, and the story is so scattered that its best twist barely registers.
Who it’s for: Paul W. S. Anderson completists and anyone who watches every Milla Jovovich movie on principle.
Boyce is the werewolf, and Alys knew it from the start. She beats him at Skull River and brings the Queen what she asked for, but Boyce comes back from the grave, and the two end up partners roaming the wasteland.
The world is in ruins, and the Church rules what is left of the City in the Mountains. Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), a witch who works in illusions, slips out of the Church's grip and embarrasses its Enforcer, Ash (Arly Jover), in front of everyone. Then the Queen hires her for a job: hunt down a shapeshifting werewolf and deliver its power by the next full moon. Alys needs a guide for the wasteland, so she brings on Boyce (Dave Bautista). Paul W. S. Anderson directs, from a George R. R. Martin short story. One hundred one minutes, one full moon on the clock.
Anyone who knows a shortcut through the wasteland. Werewolves need not apply.
