148 minutes, and a big chunk of them is people explaining the rules to Elliot Page’s Ariadne so the audience doesn’t have to raise a hand. That’s the toll. Nolan built a heist inside a dream inside another dream, and somebody has to walk you through the floor plan. Marion Cotillard’s Mal drifts through it like a ghost with a grudge and makes every scene colder. Leo plays Cobb as a guy dragging a suitcase of guilt through every level. Tom Hardy steals the movie with one smirk, Joseph Gordon-Levitt fights in a spinning hallway that still looks impossible, and the music hits like a foghorn in your chest. It made $839.8 million worldwide, and 2.88 million IMDb ratings average an 8.8. A 9.0 because it’s the rare blockbuster that trusts you to keep up and pays you back for paying attention. $408 says you spin something on your kitchen table tonight and watch it way longer than you’d admit.
What works: The rotating hallway fight, Tom Hardy’s swagger, the folding Paris street, and a finale that cuts between dream levels without losing you.
What doesn’t: Characters spend a lot of runtime explaining rules out loud, and most of the crew besides Cobb barely gets an inner life.
Who it’s for: People who love a heist movie for the planning, and anyone who wants to argue about an ending until midnight.
Cobb plants the idea in Fischer, finally lets go of Mal and makes it home to his kids. He spins his top on the table and walks away before it falls, and the movie cuts to black while it wobbles.
Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief who works the night shift, literally: he slips into people's dreams and walks out with their secrets. He also can't go home to his kids in the States. A powerful businessman named Saito (Ken Watanabe) says he can fix that, if Cobb pulls off the job everyone calls impossible: planting an idea in the head of energy heir Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy) instead of stealing one. Cobb builds a crew, including his right-hand man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), forger Eames (Tom Hardy) and rookie dream architect Ariadne (Elliot Page). Christopher Nolan directs. One hundred forty-eight minutes, a lot of them in slow motion.
Architects, chemists and anyone who can sleep on a long flight. Bring your totem.
