Last Crusade’s Nazis are pure Saturday-morning villains, the tank chase keeps going long after it’s made its point, and Marcus Brody gets turned into a lost tourist for cheap laughs. None of it matters, because Sean Connery plays Harrison Ford’s dad, and the two of them bicker like two professors stuck sharing one tiny office. This is the funniest Indy by a mile. Connery takes down a fighter plane with an umbrella and a flock of seagulls. Ford gets called Junior in front of everyone and visibly shrinks. The River Phoenix opening explains the hat, the whip and the snakes in one tight sprint, and the finale swaps explosions for puzzles. It made $474.2 million worldwide on a reported $48 million budget. A 9.2 because under all the chases it’s a story about a son trying to get his dad to look up from his notebook, and it lands. $41 says you call somebody Junior this week and refuse to explain why.
What works: Ford and Connery’s father-son sniping, the River Phoenix prologue, and a finale built on puzzles instead of explosions.
What doesn’t: The tank chase runs long, the Nazi villains are flat, and Marcus Brody gets reduced to a bumbling punchline.
Who it’s for: Families who want one adventure that everyone from grandpa to the kids will actually sit through.
Donovan shoots Henry Sr. to force Indy through the Grail traps, then picks the wrong cup and crumbles to dust. Indy saves his dad with the real Grail, Elsa falls into the chasm reaching for it, and Henry finally calls his son Indiana.
A prologue in 1912 Utah finds teenage Indy (River Phoenix) trying to save a golden cross from treasure hunters, and picking up a lifelong fear of snakes along the way. Then it jumps to 1938. Archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) learns that his father, Henry Jones Sr. (Sean Connery), has vanished in Venice while hunting the Holy Grail, and his diary full of clues has turned up in Indy's mailbox. Indy grabs his old friend Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott), teams up with Austrian scholar Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody) and starts digging. Steven Spielberg directs. One hundred twenty-seven minutes, hat stays on.
Anyone with a library card and a bullwhip. Fear of snakes acceptable.
