Inglourious Basterds's Interests
GeneralMovie theaters, strudel with cream, glasses of milk, pipes and very long talks at very small tables.
MusicNo original score. Tarantino raids his record shelf: lots of Ennio Morricone, a dash of David Bowie.
MoviesThe Dirty Dozen (1967), the original squad movie. Django Unchained (2012), Tarantino and Waltz again.
TelevisionBand of Brothers. Same war, way less strudel.
HeroesShosanna Dreyfus. Runs a cinema in Paris with an excellent poker face.

How Inglourious Basterds Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Tarantino misspelled the title on purpose, staged a war movie like a spaghetti western, and then gave the squad the movie is named after surprisingly little to do. Most of the 153 minutes belongs to Hans Landa and Shosanna, and that’s the right call. Christoph Waltz plays Landa as a polite man with a pen and a pipe who is scarier than any explosion, and the opening farmhouse scene is one long held breath. Mélanie Laurent gives Shosanna a quiet, steady anger that the film takes completely seriously. The weakness is the talking. Some chapters stretch a single conversation past the point of tension and into the point of checking the clock, and Brad Pitt’s Aldo is more accent than character. The tavern basement scene is the exception, a slow fuse that never lets up. It made $321.5 million worldwide on a reported $70 million budget. An 8.7 because the suspense is masterful even when the pacing isn’t. $708 says you look up Christoph Waltz’s other movies before the night is over.

What works: Christoph Waltz’s Landa, the opening farmhouse scene, Mélanie Laurent’s Shosanna and suspense built almost entirely out of conversation.

What doesn’t: Several chapters stretch one conversation well past its tension, and the Basterds themselves get less screen time and depth than the title promises.

Who it’s for: Viewers who love slow-burn suspense and can handle a long, talky war film with sudden bursts of violence.

Spoilers

Shosanna’s plan to burn down her own cinema during the Nazi premiere works, though she doesn’t survive the night, and the Basterds’ bombs finish the job with Hitler inside. Landa cuts a deal to switch sides, and Aldo makes sure he can never hide what he was.

Great
Inglourious Basterds's Blurbs
About me:

In 1941, in occupied France, SS Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) pays a very polite visit to a dairy farmer named Perrier LaPadite (Denis Ménochet), and young Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) barely gets away. Three years later she is running a movie theater in Paris under a new name. Meanwhile Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) leads a squad of Jewish-American soldiers behind enemy lines with one job: make the German army extremely nervous. Quentin Tarantino tells it in chapters. One hundred fifty-three minutes, and nobody has ever made a glass of milk this stressful.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can keep a straight face in four languages. Landa is listening.
