How Insidious: Out of the Further Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Routine teeth cleanings will never feel routine again, and that dental office is the best idea Insidious: Out of the Further has. Gemma, a single mom and hygienist, gets knocked into the Further mid-appointment and learns she’s a courier, someone who can carry things between the living world and the spirit one. Then the formula kicks in. Creepy elderly strangers on her street, a VHS tape full of answers, a cult leader in a blindfold, a red door: six movies in, the franchise is mostly rearranging its own furniture. A few set pieces do chill, and Lin Shaye is back as Elise, which always helps. Audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore, but it made $170.3 million worldwide on a reported $18M, so the Further isn’t closing anytime soon. A 4.4 because a couple of real scares can’t hide the formula. $55.19 says you flinch the next time a dentist asks you to open wide.

What works: A few set pieces are genuinely creepy, and the dental office setting gives the franchise a fresh, nasty twist.

What doesn’t: Most of the story recycles the series’ old tricks, and six movies in, the rules of the Further feel more familiar than frightening.

Who it’s for: Insidious regulars who will show up for any new trip into the Further.

Spoilers

Gemma learns her mother was a courier too and had been protecting her from Cyrus all along. To save Maya, Gemma pulls the whole house into the Further, where Cyrus’s own followers turn on him, and a mid-credits scene leaves him locked behind a red door with a ghostly dentist.

Insidious: Out of the Further's Blurbs
About me:

Gemma Hall (Amelia Eve) is a single mom and dental hygienist raising her daughter Maya (Island Austin) in the house she grew up in, the same house where something terrible happened to her family back in 1999. She is dating Nick (Brandon Perea), a police officer, and trying hard to keep life normal. Then the old visions start creeping back, three elderly strangers on her street seem very interested in her, and an accident at work drops her straight into the Further, the spirit realm. Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier. Jacob Chase directs. One hundred six minutes, leave a light on.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can sleep without a nightlight. Teach Gemma your ways.
