Interstellar's Interests
GeneralCorn fields, dust storms, old NASA hardware, wormholes, robots shaped like filing cabinets.
MusicHans Zimmer. He built the score around a giant church pipe organ, and it rules.
Movies2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The blueprint. Contact (1997), more McConaughey near a wormhole.
TelevisionCosmos. For when you need the wormhole part explained one more time.
HeroesTARS. Humor setting dialed down to seventy-five percent. Still the funniest one aboard.

How Interstellar Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Halfway through the most science-heavy blockbuster of its decade, Anne Hathaway stops to argue that love is basically a force of physics, and the movie expects you to nod along. That’s Interstellar in one scene: real wormhole math sitting next to feelings at full volume. Some of it is clunky. The farm dialogue gets buried under wind and that giant pipe organ, and the last act asks for a lot of faith. But Matthew McConaughey watching years of video messages from his kids is the scene that wrecks everybody, and he plays it with nothing but his face. TARS, a walking filing cabinet with jokes, is the MVP. The water planet wave is pure dread. It runs 169 minutes, made $782.9 million worldwide, and 2.62 million IMDb ratings average an 8.7. An 8.3 because when it hits, nothing else hits like it, and when it lectures, you feel every minute. $2,627 says you hear the ticking in the water planet scene and start counting how many years you just lost.

What works: McConaughey watching the video messages, the docking sequence, TARS, and a score that makes space feel enormous and lonely.

What doesn’t: Dialogue gets buried in the sound mix, and the love-as-physics speech and the third act ask the audience to take a lot on faith.

Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever cried at a sci-fi movie and blamed allergies, and space nerds who want the math with the feelings.

Spoilers

Cooper falls into the black hole and ends up inside a tesseract behind Murph’s old bookshelf, so he was the ghost all along. He sends her the data she needs to save humanity, wakes up decades later to say goodbye to an elderly Murph, and flies off to find Brand.

Interstellar's Blurbs
About me:

Earth's crops are dying, the dust storms never quit, and former NASA test pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is stuck farming corn with his father-in-law Donald (John Lithgow) and his two kids. His daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) is convinced there's a ghost in her bedroom. A strange pattern in the dust leads father and daughter to a secret NASA base, where Professor Brand (Michael Caine) and his daughter Amelia (Anne Hathaway) are planning a trip through a wormhole near Saturn to find humanity a new home. They need a pilot. Christopher Nolan directs. One hundred sixty-nine minutes, give or take some relativity.

Who I'd like to meet:

Pilots with free time and strong opinions about corn. NASA is hiring, quietly.
