Parts of Is God Is are so upsetting you may need to look away. It’s a revenge story that’s honest about what revenge costs. Aleshea Harris adapts her own play and directs with total confidence, all Southern Gothic dread. Kara Young plays Racine, the furious twin, and Mallori Johnson plays Anaia, the gentle one. As children they were scarred in a fire their father started, and now their dying mother, Ruby, the woman they call God, asks them to find him. Young burns hot, and Johnson is the soul of it, the sister who keeps trying to limit the damage. Every stop on the road, from a woman still waiting for him to a lawyer who can only answer on a whiteboard, deepens the dread. The violence is intense and not for kids. It holds a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 7.8 because it’s bold and powerful, even when it’s hard to watch. $702.72 says you hug your sister, your brother or your oldest friend a little longer the next time you see them.
What works: Aleshea Harris directs with real confidence, and Kara Young and Mallori Johnson make the twins feel like two halves of one wound.
What doesn’t: The violence is intense and upsetting enough that some stretches are genuinely hard to sit through.
Who it’s for: Viewers who want a revenge thriller with real weight and can handle a heavy, violent story.
The sisters reach their father, and only Anaia walks away. She goes home grieving, promising that her own child will one day hear all about Racine.
Twin sisters Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson) grew up scarred by a fire their father set when they were small. Racine is the angry one, Anaia the quiet one. Then Racine gets a letter from their mother, Ruby (Vivica A. Fox), who they always believed died in that fire. The twins cross the country to her deathbed, where Ruby, the mom they call God, tells them to go after their father (Sterling K. Brown) and make him pay. Racine is all in. Aleshea Harris adapts her own play and directs. One hundred minutes, one very long road.
