Full disclosure: the clown is not the scariest grown-up in Derry. The parents are, and the movie knows it. Pennywise, meanwhile, gets overexposed. Bill Skarsgård is a great creep with wandering eyes and a voice like a broken music box, but the film leans on loud CGI jump scares so often that by the last act he’s more carnival mascot than nightmare. What works is the Losers Club. Finn Wolfhard has the fastest mouth in Maine, Jack Dylan Grazer is a nervous wreck in the best way, and Sophia Lillis is the real lead. The rock fight and the bike rides feel like a summer you actually lived. 135 minutes is a lot for a horror movie, and the middle repeats the same scare with different kids. It made $719.8 million worldwide on a reported $35 to 40 million budget. A 7.4 because the kids are great and the scares get lazy. $431 says you walk past a storm drain this week and pick up the pace.
What works: The Losers Club cast, Sophia Lillis especially, and a summer-in-the-eighties friendship story that feels real.
What doesn’t: Pennywise is overused, and the loud CGI jump scares get repetitive long before the movie ends.
Who it’s for: Teens and grown-ups who like coming-of-age movies with a horror coat of paint, not anyone with a clown phobia.
The Losers follow Pennywise into his lair under the house on Neibolt Street, rescue Bev, accept that Georgie is really gone, and beat the clown back by refusing to be afraid. They make a pact to return if It ever comes back.
In October 1988, little Georgie Denbrough chases a paper boat into a storm drain in Derry, Maine, and vanishes. The next summer his big brother Bill (Jaeden Lieberher) is still looking, with his friends Richie (Finn Wolfhard), Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Stanley (Wyatt Oleff) along for the ride. New kid Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor) has been reading up on town history, and it's full of missing children. Beverly (Sophia Lillis) and Mike (Chosen Jacobs) join the crew, and every one of them starts seeing the same clown, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). Andy Muschietti directs. One hundred thirty-five minutes, keep away from the sewers.
Anyone brave enough to bike past the house on Neibolt Street. Leave your balloons at home.
