The coziest Christmas movie ever made spends most of its runtime watching a good man lose, over and over. George Bailey gives up college, gives up seeing the world, and gives up his honeymoon money to keep a small loan office alive, while Mr. Potter sits in his office like the reason people hate banks. Clarence doesn’t show up until late, and the first stretch can feel like a biography you didn’t sign up for. Stick with it. James Stewart’s face when George’s worst night finally arrives is some of the rawest acting of its era, and Donna Reed gives Mary more backbone than the script asked for. The dance floor that opens into a swimming pool is still perfect. It was made on a reported $3.2 million budget and somehow plays better every single December. A 9.3 because it earns every tear at the end the hard way. $538 says you hear a bell ring this December and mention angels out loud.
What works: James Stewart’s raw lead performance, Donna Reed’s warmth, Lionel Barrymore’s icy Potter, and an ending that earns its tears.
What doesn’t: The first stretch moves slowly through years of George’s life, and Clarence arrives so late he almost feels like a guest star.
Who it’s for: Anyone who needs a reminder that an ordinary life matters, and families who want one old movie everyone will cry at together.
Clarence shows George a Bedford Falls where he was never born, and the town is crueler and emptier without him. George begs to live again, runs home through the snow, and the whole town shows up to cover the missing money while a bell rings for Clarence’s wings.
It's Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls, and George Bailey (James Stewart) is in serious trouble. Up in heaven, the angels hear a whole town praying for him and hand the case to Clarence (Henry Travers), a sweet, clumsy angel who still hasn't earned his wings. First, Clarence has to study George's entire life: the big dreams of seeing the world, the family Building and Loan that keeps pulling him home, a girl named Mary (Donna Reed), and a lifelong fight with Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore), the meanest rich man in town. Frank Capra directs. One hundred thirty-one minutes, bring tissues.
Anyone who needs a reminder that they matter. Also anyone with a spare angel.
