Reruns make up a big chunk of Jackass: Best and Last, and the movie never pretends otherwise. This is a farewell tour for a stunt crew that has spent nearly three decades getting hurt on purpose, and a lot of it is a highlight reel of old bits you may have already seen a dozen times. The new stunts are fewer, because the crew is older now, and you can feel the clock ticking. A brand new, extremely unfriendly escape room is the best of the fresh material. Then something sneaks up on you. The opening number, the whole gang restaging their famous old bits to Holding Out for a Hero, is goofy and weirdly sweet, and old footage of the late Ryan Dunn hits harder than any stunt. Critics gave it 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 6.0 because it’s a bunch of old friends saying goodbye the only way they know how. $523 says you wince at a stunt you’ve already seen five times, then rewind it so you can wince again.
What works: The mix of new stunts and greatest hits plays like a fond look back, and the goodbye lands with real feeling.
What doesn’t: Too much of the running time is recycled footage, so longtime fans will recognize a lot of it before the punchline arrives.
Who it’s for: Longtime fans of the crew who want one last ride, and anyone who can watch grown adults get hurt on purpose and laugh about it.
The finale echoes the first movie’s opening, with the original crew riding a giant grocery cart through a string of explosions. The cart smashes through a sign that reads The End and tumbles down a hill, and the riders turn out to be puppets while the real crew watches from a safe distance.
Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Dave England, Danger Ehren and Preston Lacy gear up one final time, joined by the crew who signed on for the last movie: Zach Holmes, Jasper, Rachel Wolfson and Jasper's dad, Dark Shark. Director Jeff Tremaine mixes the greatest hits from nearly thirty years of painful pranks with brand new stunts, footage nobody has seen before, and the whole gang looking back on it all. It plays like a farewell tour where every stop ends with somebody getting hurt on purpose. Ninety-two minutes, bring ice packs.
