Three times. That’s how often Jackie Brown walks you through the same shopping bag swap at a mall, from three different angles, and by the third pass your snacks are long gone. It’s the price of Tarantino’s slowest, most grown-up movie, and at 154 minutes it never hurries. Pam Grier plays Jackie as a woman who’s tired, broke and smarter than every man chasing her, and she lets you watch her think. Robert Forster’s bail bondsman is the sweetest guy in any Tarantino film, a quiet man who buys a soul tape because she played the song for him once. Samuel L. Jackson’s Ordell talks like a salesman who forgot he sells guns. Robert De Niro plays a burned-out ex-con who can barely finish a sentence, and Bridget Fonda spends her scenes on the couch needling him. It made $39.7 million domestic on a reported $12M budget. An 8.4 because it trades flash for heart and the heart wins. $3,366 says you hear the Delfonics once and suddenly want a tape deck in your car.
What works: Pam Grier and Robert Forster have a quiet, grown-up chemistry nobody else in Tarantino’s movies gets, and every supporting player is perfectly cast.
What doesn’t: At 154 minutes it drags in spots, and replaying the mall swap three times tests your patience even when the payoff is good.
Who it’s for: Fans of slow-burn crime stories where the smartest person in the room is the one nobody’s watching, and anybody who still owns a tape deck.
Jackie plays everyone, walks away with the money, and steers Ordell into Max’s office, where Ray Nicolette is waiting and Ordell never walks out. She asks Max to come to Spain with her, he says no, and she drives off singing along to the radio while he watches her go.
Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) is a flight attendant on a small Mexican airline who earns extra carrying cash across the border for gun dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). Then ATF agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and detective Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) stop her at the airport, and the bag holds more than she was told. Bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) handles her release and falls for her a little. Meanwhile Ordell, backed by ex-con Louis Gara (Robert De Niro) and his girlfriend Melanie (Bridget Fonda), gets jumpy about anyone who might talk. Quentin Tarantino directs. One hundred fifty-four minutes, everybody working an angle.
Anyone who knows every word to every Delfonics song. Bring a mixtape.
