Jason Bourne already knows who he is, so this sequel digs up his dad and hopes nobody notices it’s the same movie again. A secret file, a CIA boss in a dark room, a protest that turns into a riot in Athens, an assassin with history, and Matt Damon frowning at laptops between fights. Damon still owns the role. He plays exhaustion so well you feel tired for him. Paul Greengrass shakes the camera so hard during the Athens chase you’ll want to hold onto the couch. Tommy Lee Jones growls through the CIA director like every sentence costs him money, and Alicia Vikander is sharp as the young agent playing her own angle. The Las Vegas finale, an armored truck plowing through traffic on the Strip, is huge, loud and kind of numbing. It made $415.5 million worldwide on a reported $120M. A 5.0 because Damon is great and the script is a photocopy of a photocopy. $1,494 says the next time a stranger bumps into you on a crowded sidewalk, you check your pockets and then the rooftops.
What works: Matt Damon still carries the role with ease, and the Athens riot chase is a tense, expertly staged set piece.
What doesn’t: The plot recycles the earlier films beat for beat, and the father backstory and tech subplot add almost nothing.
Who it’s for: Bourne completists who just want one more round with Damon, no matter the script.
Dewey had Bourne’s father killed to push Bourne into the program, and the Asset was the man who carried it out. In Las Vegas, Heather Lee is the one who takes down Dewey, Bourne finishes the Asset in a brutal fight beneath a casino, and he walks away after catching Lee planning to have him eliminated if he won’t come back in.
Years after blowing the lid off the CIA's secret programs, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is living off the grid in Greece, making money in underground bare-knuckle fights. In Reykjavík, his old ally Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) hacks into the CIA and finds files on how Bourne was recruited, and on what his father had to do with it. She heads to Athens to tell him. Back at the agency, Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and cyber chief Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) go after both of them, and Dewey sends in a ruthless operative known as the Asset (Vincent Cassel). Paul Greengrass directs. One hundred twenty-three minutes, zero small talk.
Anyone who can stay off the grid. Bourne has notes.
