Jerry Maguire’s real romance is the one with Rod Tidwell, and the movie lights up every time those two share a room. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Rod as a loud, proud receiver who wants respect and a bigger contract, in that order, and their famous phone call is still the best scene. The honest problem is Jerry and Dorothy. He marries her at a low point, more out of loneliness than love, and the movie asks you to cheer anyway. Renée Zellweger plays Dorothy with so much warmth that you almost buy it. Tom Cruise is great as a guy who’s charming for a living and clueless at home. Jay Mohr’s slick Bob Sugar is a perfect little villain. At 139 minutes, it lingers. It made $273.7 million worldwide on a reported $50M. A 7.6 because the sports agent story is sharp and the love story needed one more rewrite. $631 says you write a heartfelt late-night email to your whole team someday and hit send before thinking it through.
What works: Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Rod Tidwell is a force of nature, and his scenes with Cruise have real heart and real laughs.
What doesn’t: Jerry’s marriage to Dorothy is built on loneliness more than love, and the movie wants applause for it anyway.
Who it’s for: Sports fans who like the business side, and anyone who wants a rom-com with a little sweat on it.
Rod takes a hard hit in a big Monday night game, gets back up and celebrates for the crowd, which lands him the contract he’s been chasing. Jerry realizes he wants to share that moment with Dorothy, rushes to her and starts a big speech in front of her friends, and she stops him before he can finish.
Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a slick sports agent at a giant firm, until a late-night crisis of conscience turns into a mission statement about caring more and signing fewer clients. His company fires him almost immediately, and his protégé Bob Sugar (Jay Mohr) races him to the phones to grab his roster. Jerry ends up with one client, Arizona Cardinals receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), and one employee, single mom Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), who believed in the memo. Cameron Crowe writes and directs. One hundred thirty-eight minutes, one fishbowl, one very loud phone call.
Anyone willing to yell the famous line at full volume. You know the one.
