Dwayne Johnson spends a long stretch of this sequel doing a Danny DeVito impression, and the bit peaks in its very first scene. Then Kevin Hart does Danny Glover in slow motion, and every line takes forever to land. That’s The Next Level’s whole idea: same jungle, same game, wrong people stuck in the avatars. Swapping bodies again is cute, but the movie leans on two grumpy grandpas not understanding video games so often that you’ll start finishing the jokes for them. The plot is basically the first one with a new map. The good stuff is real. Awkwafina’s cat burglar is the sharpest new addition, and the rope bridge escape from a mob of angry mandrills is a great set piece. Karen Gillan still sells every fight. Audiences gave it an A minus CinemaScore and $801.7 million worldwide on a reported $125M to $132M. A 5.7 because everyone on screen is clearly having fun and the script is running on autopilot. $2.12 says you try your grandpa’s voice at the next holiday get-together and get exactly one laugh.
What works: Awkwafina is a sharp addition, and the mandrill rope bridge sequence is the best action in either new Jumanji.
What doesn’t: The grandpa impressions wear out fast, and the story is a lightly remixed copy of the first film’s quest.
Who it’s for: Families who loved Welcome to the Jungle and want the same crew back for another easy round.
The team storms the warlord’s fortress and wins the game, and Milo, who is ill back home, chooses to stay in Jumanji as the horse Cyclone after making peace with Eddie. A closing scene hints the game is starting to leak into the real world.
After their first trip into the game, Spencer (Alex Wolff) is home from college, feeling small, and quietly fixes the busted Jumanji console so he can be a hero one more time. His friends Martha (Morgan Turner) and Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain) realize he has vanished and go in after him. Problem: the game is glitching, and Spencer's grandpa Eddie (Danny DeVito) and Eddie's old friend Milo (Danny Glover) get pulled in too. Now Eddie is Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Milo is Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart), Fridge is Professor Oberon (Jack Black), and nobody is in the body they wanted. Jake Kasdan directs. One hundred twenty-three minutes, wrong avatars everywhere.
Anyone who can explain a video game to their grandpa. Slowly. Twice.
