Bugs crawl out of the villain’s face in Jumanji and he still makes zero impression. Bobby Cannavale deserved more than a guy who growls about a jewel. Luckily nobody came for him. They came for Jack Black playing a teenage girl stuck inside a middle-aged professor, and he’s the funniest thing in it by a mile, all posture and phone withdrawal. Dwayne Johnson does a great nervous nerd in a giant body, Kevin Hart yells his way through being tiny, and Karen Gillan’s dance fighting is goofy in the best way. The game rules, with limited lives and a guide character who repeats the same line, are a smart joke. Trouble is, everything between the jokes is a theme park ride with a plot on a sticky note. Made $962.5 million worldwide, which is wild for a sequel nobody was begging for. A 6.6 because it’s a better time than it has any right to be. $30.53 says you catch yourself checking your forearm for extra lives tomorrow.
What works: Jack Black’s teen-girl performance, The Rock playing scared, and video game jokes like the guide who keeps repeating himself.
What doesn’t: The villain is a nothing role, and the action between the jokes is generic jungle running and CGI animals.
Who it’s for: Families who want one movie the kids and the parents will both be quoting in the car.
The group wins by returning the jewel to the jaguar statue and wakes up back in their own bodies. Alex, the player who’d been stuck in the game for years, makes it home to his own time and grows up into a dad, and the kids smash the console.
Four high schoolers land in detention together: nervous gamer Spencer (Alex Wolff), football star Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain), selfie queen Bethany (Madison Iseman) and loner Martha (Morgan Turner). In the school basement they find a dusty video game console, pick their characters, and get sucked straight into a jungle. Now Spencer is buff explorer Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Fridge is pint-sized Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart), Martha is martial artist Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), and Bethany is a middle-aged map expert, Professor Shelly Oberon (Jack Black). To get home, they have to win the game. Jake Kasdan directs. One hundred nineteen minutes, three lives each.
Gamers who read the weakness list before picking. Keep the cake away from Mouse.
