A billionaire builds a dinosaur zoo and hands the keys to one sweaty IT guy with a grudge. That’s the whole security plan. Richard Attenborough plays John Hammond like a kindly grandpa who never read the fine print on his own island, and Jeff Goldblum spends the movie being right in the most annoying way possible. The T. rex attack in the rain is still the scariest thing a cup of water has ever done, and the raptors in the kitchen still hold up. The real flaw: the kids’ scenes get shrill, and Sam Neill’s arc about not liking children is about as subtle as a Jeep falling out of a tree. It made $1.1 billion worldwide, and its dinosaurs look better than ones made decades later. A 9.3 because it’s a monster movie, a theme park ride and a warning label all at once. $602 says you check your glass of water for ripples the next time a truck rolls by.
What works: The T. rex in the rain, the raptors in the kitchen, Jeff Goldblum, and effects that still look real.
What doesn’t: The kids’ scenes get shrill, and Grant’s whole doesn’t-like-kids arc is obvious from his very first scene.
Who it’s for: Anyone who had a dinosaur phase as a kid and never fully grew out of it.
Nedry shuts down the park’s security to smuggle out embryos and doesn’t make it off the island. In the visitor center the T. rex crashes in and takes out the raptors right before they get our heroes, and the survivors fly away.
Billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) has built a theme park on an island off Costa Rica, stocked with dinosaurs cloned from ancient DNA. Before it opens, his investors want experts to sign off. So he flies in paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and chaos theory mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), plus his grandkids Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim (Joseph Mazzello). The tour is going great, mostly. Then a tropical storm rolls in. Steven Spielberg directs. One hundred twenty-seven minutes, objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
Anyone who spared no expense. Bring night vision goggles and a sturdy Jeep.
