Locusts. The big new threat in a dinosaur movie called Dominion is a swarm of giant locusts, and the plot cares more about crop damage than anything with scales. It runs 147 minutes and splits into two movies that barely touch: Owen and Claire chasing a kidnapped Maisie across the globe, and the original trio sneaking around a tech company’s campus. When the old gang reunites, it’s genuinely nice. Laura Dern and Sam Neill slide right back into their rhythm, and Jeff Goldblum delivers every line like he’s narrating a nature show he finds personally hilarious. DeWanda Wise is the best new addition as Kayla, a cargo pilot with zero patience. A motorcycle chase through Malta, raptors on Owen’s tail, is the one sequence that moves. The rest is people in hallways explaining genetics. It made $1 billion worldwide anyway. A 3.4 because the reunion is sweet and the dinosaurs feel like guest stars in their own franchise. $35.37 says a grasshopper lands near you this summer and you back away slowly like it works for Biosyn.
What works: The legacy cast’s chemistry is a real treat, and DeWanda Wise brings fresh swagger as pilot Kayla Watts.
What doesn’t: The locust plot is a strange, low-stakes main event, and at 147 minutes the dinosaurs are mostly set dressing.
Who it’s for: Longtime Jurassic fans who want to see Grant, Sattler and Malcolm share a frame one more time.
Biosyn’s boss, Lewis Dodgson, made the locusts, and his own employee Ramsay Cole secretly helps the heroes expose him. Dodgson meets a bad end while fleeing, Maisie learns her mother edited her genes to protect her, and that research helps wipe out the locusts. The film ends with people and dinosaurs learning to share the planet.
Four years after dinosaurs got loose on the mainland, they are everywhere: forests, cities, black markets. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) are raising Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) in a cabin in the Sierra Nevada, hiding her from people who want her for her DNA. Meanwhile, giant locusts are chewing through American farms, and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) suspects the gene company Biosyn. She recruits Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) is already working inside Biosyn. Colin Trevorrow directs. One hundred forty-seven minutes, the old gang back together.
Anyone who still flinches when a glass of water ripples. The original trio is waiting.
