$1.67 billion worldwide, and the heroine outruns a T. rex in high heels. That’s the vibe. Jurassic World is about a park that keeps cooking up bigger dinosaurs because guests got bored, made by a studio doing the exact same thing, and it’s in on that joke for about one scene before it turns into the thing it’s mocking. Chris Pratt rides a motorcycle with a raptor squad like it’s a buddy cop show. Bryce Dallas Howard gets handed a character who’s mostly a schedule. The Indominus rex is a monster built for marketing, and it shows: big, white, and smart only when the plot needs it. The two nephews are there so somebody can be in danger. Fun moments, sure, the mosasaur feeding show is a blast, but it’s all theme park and no awe. A 5.4 because the first one made you look up and this one makes you check your phone. $4,124 says you watch it again anyway the next time it’s on cable.
What works: The mosasaur show, Chris Pratt’s raptor scenes, and a finale that finally gives fans the dinosaur brawl they wanted.
What doesn’t: The characters are thin, the nephews only exist to be in danger, and the new hybrid never feels like more than a marketing idea.
Who it’s for: Kids seeing their first dinosaur movie and adults who just want big monsters crashing into things.
The T. rex and Blue the raptor team up against the Indominus rex, and the mosasaur leaps out and drags it into the lagoon. Hoskins gets taken out by the raptors he wanted to turn into weapons.
Twenty-two years after the first park went sideways, Isla Nublar finally has a fully working dinosaur theme park, and it's packed. Operations manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is way too busy to hang out with her visiting nephews, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins). Attendance needs a boost, so the lab cooked up a brand-new hybrid, the Indominus rex. Owner Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan) wants an expert to check its enclosure, so in comes Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), a Navy veteran who trains Velociraptors. Owen is not impressed. Colin Trevorrow directs. One hundred twenty-four minutes, one very tall fence.
Anyone who can calm down a raptor. Hand out, palm flat, slowly.
