Four movies are fighting over these 94 minutes: a boxing comeback, a pizzeria rescue, a teen romance and a karate tournament. None of them gets room to breathe. Ben Wang plays Li Fong, a kung fu kid from Beijing whose mom lands a job in New York and gets him to promise he’s done fighting. He promptly finds a friend in Mia, a rival in her ex, karate champ Conor Day, and a side job training her dad Victor, a former boxer with a pizza shop and a debt problem. Then Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han and Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso team up to coach him, and seeing them together is the whole reason this exists. They’re basically a nostalgia delivery service, though, and the plot moves like it’s late for practice. It made $117.1 million worldwide, with an A- from CinemaScore crowds. A 4.8 because the legends are a treat and the rest is a highlight reel. $27.38 says you end up in a heated debate about New York pizza with someone who’s never been there.
What works: Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio coaching side by side is a genuine nostalgia rush, and the training scenes have bounce.
What doesn’t: Too many subplots fight over 94 minutes, so the boxing story, the romance and the tournament all feel rushed.
Who it’s for: Families who grew up on the old movies or Cobra Kai and want a light, quick night out with the kids.
Li beats Conor in the Five Boroughs final with a reworked dragon kick that Han and Daniel invent together, then shows him mercy after a cheap shot. In the closing gag, Johnny Lawrence pitches Daniel a karate-themed pizzeria called Miyagi-Dough.
A 1985 prologue has Mr. Miyagi telling young Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) that his karate grew out of the Han family's kung fu. Jump to Beijing, where Li Fong (Ben Wang) trains with his great-uncle Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). After a family tragedy, Li's mom, Dr. Fong (Ming-Na Wen), moves them to New York and makes him swear off fighting. Li finds a friend in Mia (Sadie Stanley), her dad Victor (Joshua Jackson), an ex-boxing champ with a pizzeria and money trouble, and a bully in karate champ Conor Day (Aramis Knight). Victor wants a comeback, and Li might be his coach. Jonathan Entwistle directs. Ninety-four minutes, wax on.
