How Keeper Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Never trust a cake you didn’t buy. Keeper builds a whole anniversary weekend around one, a boxed dessert that Malcolm swears the caretaker left on the counter, and Minka flat out tells Liz it tastes awful. That cake is the sharpest idea in the movie, which says a lot about everything around it. Osgood Perkins stacks up creepy moments, a figure with a bag over her head, a phone that can’t find a signal, a doctor boyfriend who suddenly has a patient to see, but they never click together into a story. Tatiana Maslany carries all 99 minutes anyway, playing Liz as a woman slowly figuring out her romantic getaway is a trap, and she’s the reason to stay. Critics split right down the middle at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, and opening crowds handed it a D+ CinemaScore, which is brutal. A 4.6 because Maslany deserved a finished script. $2,024 says the next time someone leaves a cake on your counter, you ask to see the receipt.

What works: Tatiana Maslany commits to every scene, and Perkins knows how to make a quiet cabin feel wrong. The cake is a genuinely great piece of dread.

What doesn’t: The scary moments pile up without a story tying them together, so the big explanation lands like homework instead of horror.

Who it’s for: Osgood Perkins fans who will take mood over sense, and anyone who loves yelling at a character to just leave already.

Spoilers

Malcolm and his cousin Darren have been living for a couple of centuries by keeping the creatures in the cabin fed, and the cake was drugged to knock Liz out. The creatures choose Liz instead, and Malcolm does not get another anniversary.

Keeper's Blurbs
About me:

Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and her boyfriend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), a doctor, drive out to a secluded cabin in the woods to celebrate one year together. Waiting on the counter is a boxed cake that Malcolm says the caretaker left for them. Then his cousin Darren (Birkett Turton) and Darren's model girlfriend Minka (Eden Weiss) crash dinner, and the whole weekend starts to feel off. Malcolm heads out to see a patient, Liz stays behind on her own, and the cabin starts showing her things she cannot explain. Osgood Perkins directs. Ninety-nine minutes, zero relaxing.

Who I'd like to meet:

Couples who think a cabin weekend sounds romantic. Pack your own snacks.
