Elton John, playing a very cranky hostage version of himself, is the most fun anybody has in The Golden Circle. Bad sign. The first Kingsman felt like a sharp new suit. This one is the same suit after a week in a carry-on. Julianne Moore plays a cartel boss who runs her empire from a fake 1950s diner in the jungle, guarded by robot dogs, and she’s sunny and creepy, and then the movie gives her almost nothing to do. Channing Tatum is on the poster and barely in the movie. Pedro Pascal’s electric lasso is the best new toy, and a spy base hidden in a Kentucky whiskey distillery is a fun idea that turns into a lot of cowboy hat jokes. Some of the gags are just mean, and they go on way too long. At 141 minutes, so does everything else. It still made $410.9 million worldwide. A 4.6 because the charm got traded for volume. $3,882 says you swing a phone charger around like Whiskey’s lasso this week and knock something off a shelf.
What works: Pedro Pascal’s lasso fights are slick, Julianne Moore’s retro hideout looks great, and Elton John is having more fun than anyone.
What doesn’t: At 141 minutes it’s bloated, the new American agents barely matter, and several gags are mean for no reason and run way too long.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first Kingsman who need to see where everyone ended up, and people who think every spy movie needs more cowboy hats.
Harry survived the first movie thanks to Statesman’s tech and spends a chunk of this one with amnesia. Merlin goes out singing Take Me Home, Country Roads, Whiskey turns out to be a traitor, and Eggsy ends up marrying Princess Tilde.
Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton) went from London street kid to gentleman spy: tailored suits, the codename Galahad and a girlfriend who happens to be Princess Tilde of Sweden (Hanna Alström). Then Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore), who runs the world's biggest criminal cartel from a retro 1950s hideout in the jungle, flattens Kingsman headquarters in a single morning. Eggsy and tech genius Merlin (Mark Strong) follow an emergency protocol to Kentucky, where an American spy agency called Statesman hides inside a whiskey distillery. Agents Champagne (Jeff Bridges), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) and Ginger Ale (Halle Berry) size up their British guests. Matthew Vaughn directs. One hundred forty-one minutes, extra cowboy hats.
Anyone who owns a tailored suit and cowboy boots and refuses to choose.
