Kingsman is a spy movie with perfect manners and a final joke that has none. Up to that point it’s a sharp little ride. Colin Firth in a tailored suit taking apart a pub full of bullies is the whole pitch, and that scene should be framed. Taron Egerton is a great find, a cheeky kid who learns to wear a tie like armor. Samuel L. Jackson plays a tech billionaire villain who can’t stand the sight of blood, which is funny for a guy with his plan. Mark Strong as Merlin is the coolest teacher you never had. Then there’s the church scene. It’s a technical stunt, one long brawl cut to classic rock, but it goes on so long it turns from shocking to numb. Made $414.4 million worldwide on a reported $81 to 94 million budget. A 7.1 because the style is tailored and the taste comes off the rack. $2,367 says you say the word manners in a fake British accent before the week is out.
What works: Colin Firth’s pub fight, Taron Egerton’s star-making turn, and Samuel L. Jackson’s oddball villain who hates the sight of blood.
What doesn’t: The church brawl goes on so long it turns numb, and the very last gag is a cheap joke that undercuts the whole gentleman theme.
Who it’s for: People who love Bond but wish he’d loosen his tie and do a backflip.
Valentine shoots Harry right after the church scene, which nobody sees coming. Eggsy takes his place, beats Valentine and stops the plan to use free phone cards to turn people against each other.
Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin (Taron Egerton) is a sharp South London kid burning his talent on joyrides and trouble. Then Harry Hart (Colin Firth), a perfectly tailored gentleman who owes Eggsy's family a debt from years back, offers him a shot at joining Kingsman, a secret spy agency hiding behind a Savile Row tailor shop. Eggsy enters a brutal recruit competition overseen by Merlin (Mark Strong), up against a room full of posh kids. Meanwhile tech billionaire Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) is cooking up something big. Matthew Vaughn directs. One hundred twenty-nine minutes, manners included.
Anyone who owns a good suit. Bring an umbrella, and not for the rain.
