Daniel Craig’s Southern accent is so thick you could spread it on a biscuit. He plays the world’s greatest detective like he’s half genius, half guy who wandered over from a barbecue, and it’s the most fun he’s ever had on screen. Small problem: the accent eats a few of his lines. The bigger knock is the middle. Rian Johnson shows a few of his cards early on purpose, and for a stretch the movie feels like it’s waiting for the plot to catch up. Then it snaps shut. Ana de Armas is the heart of it, a nurse who physically can’t lie, the best mystery gimmick in years. Chris Evans in a cable-knit sweater is a fashion event. Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette and Michael Shannon make the worst family reunion imaginable. It pulled $312.9 million worldwide off a reported $40 million budget, which is a lot of sweaters. An 8.9 because it’s a puzzle box that’s also a great time. $761 says you start reading your family group chat like a suspect list.
What works: Daniel Craig having a blast, Ana de Armas as a lead you root for, and a mystery that plays fair with every clue.
What doesn’t: The middle stretch sags after the early reveal, and Blanc’s accent swallows a few of his best lines.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on Clue and still calls out a suspect halfway through every mystery.
Ransom switched Harlan’s medicine to frame Marta, but she had given him the right dose all along. Ransom ends up in handcuffs, and Marta, who inherits everything, looks down at the family from the balcony holding a mug that says My house, my rules, my coffee.
Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) writes bestselling mysteries, owns a creaky mansion and has a big family that very much wants his money. The morning after his 85th birthday party, he is found dead in his study, and the police are ready to call it suicide. Then famous detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) strolls in, hired by someone who won't say who, and starts asking questions. Every relative (Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Chris Evans) has a motive. Harlan's nurse Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) can't lie without throwing up. Rian Johnson directs. One hundred thirty minutes, one very cozy sweater.
Anyone with an airtight alibi. Bring a sweater and a straight face.
