Mira and Zoey get shortchanged, and in a movie this good that’s a real shame. At 95 minutes, KPop Demon Hunters spends so much time on Rumi that her bandmates barely get an arc, and the climax is rushed too. Everything around that is a blast. Huntrix is a K-pop girl group whose voices keep a magic barrier called the Honmoon between us and the demons, and Rumi, voiced by Arden Cho, is hiding a secret of her own. Then the Saja Boys, a rival boy band, roll in to steal their fans, and they’re demons in matching outfits. The songs push the story forward instead of stopping it, Golden is a monster, and the Saja Boys doing Your Idol in black hanbok and horsehair hats is one of the coolest scenes of the year. The fights move like the Spider-Verse movies, and the jokes roast K-pop tropes with love. An 8.8 because it’s about shame and self-acceptance and still bangs. $2,859 says by the weekend you’ve picked a favorite Huntrix member and are defending that pick to an eight-year-old.
What works: The songs drive the story, the animation is fluid and bold, and the film gets real feeling out of shame and self-acceptance.
What doesn’t: At 95 minutes it rushes the third act, and Mira and Zoey never get the character arcs they deserve.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever had a pop song stuck in their head for a week, kids and grown-ups alike.
Rumi is half-demon, and when that comes out at the worst possible moment, Mira and Zoey feel betrayed. She wins them back with an improvised song about accepting herself, Jinu gives himself up to save her, and Huntrix beat the demon king Gwi-Ma and raise a new rainbow Honmoon.
Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) are Huntrix, a K-pop girl group. Off stage, they hunt demons, and their voices power the Honmoon, a magic barrier that keeps demons out of our world. Their new single, "Golden," could finally seal it for good, but Rumi's voice is slipping and she is keeping a secret. Then a flashy new boy band, the Saja Boys, led by Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop), shows up to steal their fans. Small problem: the Saja Boys are demons. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans direct. Ninety-five minutes, every song a banger.
Anyone who can hit the high note and swing a sword. Lightsticks welcome.
