Every character in Lady Bird gets a soul except Kyle. Timothée Chalamet plays him as a too-cool band kid with big opinions and nothing underneath, and he feels like a joke the movie forgot to finish. Some scenes also end before they’ve had a chance to breathe, especially the quiet trouble her dad is going through. Saoirse Ronan plays Lady Bird as loud, wrong, funny and brave all at once, a kid who fibs about which house is hers and then feels terrible about it. Laurie Metcalf’s Marion is loving and exhausting in the same sentence. Their fight in a thrift store turns into a hunt for the perfect dress halfway through, and that’s the whole relationship in one scene. Beanie Feldstein’s Julie is the best friend everyone deserves. Critics gave it 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. An 8.9 because it gets a mother and daughter exactly right, even when it rushes the people around them. $4,327 says you drive past your old high school this month and slow down for no reason.
What works: Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are perfect together, and the script nails how a mother and daughter can fight and love in the same breath.
What doesn’t: Kyle is more of a punchline than a person, and some side stories, like her dad’s quiet struggles, get rushed.
Who it’s for: Anyone who couldn’t wait to leave their hometown and then missed it the second they did.
Lady Bird secretly gets into a college in New York with her dad’s help, and her mom is so hurt she stops talking to her. At the airport, Marion drives off without saying goodbye, then circles back too late. In New York, Lady Bird starts going by Christine and leaves her mom a heartfelt voicemail.
Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) goes by Lady Bird, a name she picked for herself. It's 2002 in Sacramento, she's a senior at a Catholic high school, and she wants out, ideally to a college on the East Coast with some culture. Her mom Marion (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse pulling double shifts, thinks that's unrealistic and says so. The film opens with Lady Bird ending one of those arguments by rolling out of the moving car. Her dad Larry (Tracy Letts) is gentler. She has her best friend Julie (Beanie Feldstein), a part in the school musical, and big plans. Greta Gerwig writes and directs. Ninety-four minutes, call her Lady Bird.
Anyone from Sacramento who swore they'd leave. Call your mom.
