How Last Breath Performed
movie guru's TLDR

If you’ve seen the 2019 documentary this is based on, Last Breath has no surprises left for you. The people are lightly sketched too, because the movie cares more about procedure than personalities. The procedure is gripping. Saturation divers Chris Lemons, Duncan Allcock and David Yuasa spend weeks in pressurized chambers and ride a bell to the bottom of the North Sea to fix gas lines. When the ship’s positioning system fails in heavy seas, Chris’s lifeline snags and snaps, and he’s left alone on the seabed with only his emergency air. Alex Parkinson cuts between the dark water and a bridge crew trying to hold a drifting ship in place by hand, and the clock never lets up. Woody Harrelson is terrific as the veteran in the bell, and Simu Liu plays the diver who swears he’ll come back. A 6.9 because it’s lean, honest and a little thin. $3,586 says you read about saturation diving the minute it ends and come away amazed that anyone does it for a living.

What works: The tension is relentless and clear, and Woody Harrelson brings warmth and calm to the diver running the rescue from the bell.

What doesn’t: The characters stay thin, and anyone who saw the 2019 documentary already knows every beat of how it goes.

Who it’s for: People who love true survival stories told straight, with no Hollywood padding.

Spoilers

By the time David reaches Chris, his air has been gone for nearly half an hour, and the crew in the bell fear they’re too late. Then Chris wakes up and starts talking, and an epilogue says the real Chris Lemons fully recovered and all three went back to finish the job.

Last Breath's Blurbs
About me:

Based on a true story from the North Sea. Chris Lemons (Finn Cole) is a saturation diver on a three-person team with Duncan Allcock (Woody Harrelson) and David Yuasa (Simu Liu). They spend the whole rotation living in pressurized chambers aboard a support ship, then ride a diving bell down to the seafloor to repair gas pipelines. On one job, Chris and David head out to work while Duncan stays in the bell, running their air, power and comms. Up top, Captain Andre Jenson (Cliff Curtis) is dealing with rough seas. Then the ship's positioning system fails. Alex Parkinson directs, after co-directing the 2019 documentary. Ninety-three minutes, every breath counts.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who has waited by the phone for someone working far from home. This one is for you.
