Somewhere on the way from the original cartoon to this remake, Jumba stopped being a goofy mad scientist and became the bad guy, and the movie feels a little heavier for it. Dean Fleischer Camp keeps the bones. Experiment 626 escapes to Kauaʻi, Lilo gets bounced from hula school for shoving Mertle off the stage, and Nani has three days to prove to a social worker that she can raise her sister. Lilo adopts the weird "dog" from the shelter, and Stitch promptly gets Nani fired from her luau job. Maia Kealoha is a find as Lilo, all stubborn heart, and Stitch is exactly as chaotic and huggable as he needs to be. Critics grumbled about the changes, from a missing villain to a big shift in the sisters’ story, and it never matches the original’s imagination. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore anyway, and it made $1.04 billion worldwide. A 6.4 because the heart survived the trip. $1,951 says you say ʻohana out loud twice this week, and once it’s to defend the dog.
What works: Maia Kealoha is a natural as Lilo, Stitch is a chaotic delight, and the bond between the sisters still lands hard.
What doesn’t: Turning Jumba into a straight villain and cutting the original’s oddest touches makes it safer and less imaginative than the cartoon.
Who it’s for: Families who grew up on the cartoon and want to share it with kids who’ll scream every time Stitch breaks something.
Stitch nearly drowns saving Lilo, and David revives him. Lilo’s guardianship is transferred to David, Tūtū and Cobra Bubbles, keeping her at home, and a mid-credits scene shows Nani studying marine biology in San Diego with Lilo’s blessing, visiting by Jumba’s portal gun.
Way out in space, scientist Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) gets busted for building Experiment 626 (Chris Sanders), a small, nearly unbreakable ball of chaos. 626 steals a ride and crash-lands on Kauai. Down there, Lilo (Maia Kealoha) just got kicked out of hula class, and her big sister Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) is raising her alone while social worker Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere) gives her three days to get it together. Lilo adopts a strange little dog from the shelter and names him Stitch. Up in space, Jumba and Agent Pleakley (Billy Magnussen) get sent to fetch him. Dean Fleischer Camp directs. One hundred eight minutes, one extremely questionable dog.
Anyone with a weird family that still works. Ohana rules apply.
