The title tells you how this ends, and Peter Berg doesn’t try to hide it. That turns Lone Survivor into less of a thriller and more of a long, hard look at four men in an impossible spot, and it works best when it stays that plain. It doesn’t always. Some stretches lean on slow motion and swelling music, reaching for a recruitment poster when the real story is heavy enough on its own. The firefight in the mountains is long and punishing, shot so you feel the rocks and the confusion more than any heroics, and it’s tough to watch. Taylor Kitsch gives Murphy a quiet authority, Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch make Axelson and Dietz feel like real friends, and Mark Wahlberg keeps Luttrell simple and steady. The final act, centered on an Afghan village, is the most moving part, and the villagers deserve more screen time. A 7.0 because it honors these men without fully trusting its own restraint. $77.46 says you reach out to a veteran you know this week and actually say thanks.
What works: The cast plays the four SEALs as real friends, and the mountain firefight conveys chaos and cost without glamour.
What doesn’t: Slow motion and big music sometimes push it toward a recruitment ad, and the Afghan villagers get too little screen time.
Who it’s for: Viewers who want a serious, sincere war film about a real mission and the people who lived through it.
Murphy moves into the open to call for help and is killed, and Dietz and Axelson fall in the fighting. A rescue helicopter carrying Kristensen is shot down. Marcus survives because a villager named Gulab and his village shelter him until American forces arrive.
The true story of Operation Red Wings, Afghanistan, 2005. A four-man Navy SEAL team, led by Lieutenant Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch) with Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matt Axelson (Ben Foster), is dropped into the mountains of Kunar province to find a Taliban commander. Erik Kristensen (Eric Bana) keeps watch from base. Radio contact is spotty from the start. Then local goat herders walk right into the team's hiding spot, and the four men have to make a hard call with no good options. Peter Berg directs, adapting Luttrell's book. One hundred twenty-one minutes, told with care for the men it honors.
Anyone who wants to learn the names. Stay through the credits.
