Love Hurts runs 83 minutes and somehow still feels padded. Ke Huy Quan plays Marvin, a cheerful real estate agent with a past as hired muscle in his brother’s crime outfit, until he refused an order to go after a lawyer named Rose and quietly let her escape. Now it’s Valentine’s week, Rose sends him a letter, and his brother’s goons start showing up at his office and his front door. That’s a fun setup, and Quan is easy to root for. The fights are the best part, crisp and goofy, with Quan bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Everything between the fights is the problem. The romance with Ariana DeBose has no spark, the jokes don’t land, and the plot just hands Marvin from one brawl to the next. It made $17.5 million worldwide on a reported $18M. A 3.4 because Quan’s charm is doing all the heavy lifting. $3.08 says you hear a realtor say motivated seller and picture a fistfight.
What works: Ke Huy Quan is warm and game, and the fight scenes are quick, playful and well staged.
What doesn’t: The romance never sparks, the jokes fall flat, and the story is just a thin string connecting one fight to the next.
Who it’s for: Ke Huy Quan fans who’ll happily watch him fight his way through a short, slight action comedy.
Marvin and Rose team up to take down his brother Knuckles, and after a final one-on-one fight, the people Knuckles cheated come and take him away. His gloomy assistant Ashley falls for Raven, the poetry-loving enforcer sent after Marvin, and Marvin finally tells Rose he loves her.
Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan) is a top real estate agent, freshly honored by his boss and mentor Cliff (Sean Astin), with a gloomy assistant, Ashley (Lio Tipton), who threatens to quit daily. He is also hiding a past. Marvin used to be a hitman for an outfit run by his estranged brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu), and when he was ordered to go after Rose (Ariana DeBose), a lawyer who stole from them, he told her to run instead. Now it is Valentine's week, a letter from Rose shows up, and so do his brother's goons. Jonathan Eusebio directs. Eighty-three minutes, mostly fistfights.
Anyone house hunting this spring. Your realtor can also win a fistfight.
