Lucky Strike keeps reaching for poetry and coming up short, and its dialogue lands with a thud. The story itself deserves care. During the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944, Scott Eastwood’s Captain John Castle and his combat engineers are sent to block a road ahead of an SS panzer division, and Castle ends up wounded and alone, trying to reach American lines at Elsenborn with only a field radio his unit calls Lassie. It’s a simple survival story, and Rod Lurie tells it plainly, opening in black and white. The suspense comes and goes, and it never quite stands out in a crowded field of war films. Eastwood is steady, and the film treats the soldiers’ courage and their losses with real respect. It holds a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and runs 103 minutes. A 5.0 because it’s sincere and solid and rarely gripping. $519 says you look up the Battle of the Bulge afterward and end up reading veterans’ stories well past midnight.
What works: It’s a sincere, straightforward survival story that treats the soldiers and the battle with real respect.
What doesn’t: The tension comes and goes, the dialogue is clunky, and a few reaching-for-poetry moments feel forced rather than earned.
Who it’s for: Viewers who like plain, old-fashioned World War II survival stories without much flash.
Castle unmasks Sergeant Bellingham as a German posing as an American, partly from the way he handles a Lucky Strike cigarette, and survives their fight before waking in a field hospital at Elsenborn, where he learns his trek delayed the SS advance. After the war he visits Rose Caldwell, the factory worker who built his radio, to thank her, and keeps Lassie as a keepsake.
December 1944, the Battle of the Bulge. Captain John Castle (Scott Eastwood) leads a squad of combat engineers ordered to block a key road and slow down an SS panzer division pushing toward American fuel depots. The mission goes wrong fast, and Castle ends up alone and wounded in the frozen Ardennes, with a field radio called Lassie and a long way to go before he reaches friendly lines at Elsenborn. Rod Lurie directs, sharing writing credit with Marc Frydman. One hundred four minutes, one radio, a lot of snow.
Veterans and the families who waited for them to come home.
