The first M3GAN was a creepy doll movie with a sense of humor. The sequel is a spy movie with a doll in it, and the swap is not an upgrade. Gerard Johnstone flips M3GAN into a good guy, then buries her under a Pentagon android named AMELIA, a doomed tech billionaire, a decades-old rogue AI and a tech conference infiltration. That’s a lot of plot for 120 minutes, and critics called it overcomplicated for good reason. The fun parts are real, though. M3GAN spends a stretch of the movie stuck inside a little toy robot, still throwing shade, and her quips land more often than not. Some critics loved the high-camp genre mashup, and when the movie leans all the way into silliness, it’s a decent time. It made $39.1 million worldwide on a reported $15 to 25 million budget. A 4.6 because the doll still has attitude and the story around her is a pileup. $237 says the next time a friend swears they’ve learned their lesson, you think of Gemma building another robot.
What works: M3GAN herself, trash-talking from inside a toy robot and then a brand new body, is still the funniest thing on screen, and the campiest stretches are a good time.
What doesn’t: The plot crams a Pentagon android, a dead billionaire, an old rogue AI and a spy mission into one movie, and the creepy horror that made the first one work is gone.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first movie who showed up for M3GAN’s attitude more than her scares.
Christian, the anti-AI cybersecurity expert, turns out to be the one controlling AMELIA, using her to scare the world into banning AI. M3GAN sacrifices herself to stop a newly self-aware AMELIA, then turns out to have saved one more backup of herself on Gemma’s computer.
Two years after M3GAN went haywire, Gemma (Allison Williams) has become an advocate for AI rules, and she's building a robotic exoskeleton with her old coworkers Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and Tess (Jen Van Epps) while raising her niece Cady (Violet McGraw). Then Colonel Sattler (Timm Sharp) brings bad news. The Pentagon built a spy android called AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno) out of copied M3GAN tech, and she just slipped out of his control. The one AI that knows how AMELIA thinks is M3GAN (Amie Donald), and she wants back in, plus a new body. Gerard Johnstone directs. One hundred twenty minutes, one very sassy software update.
Anyone with a smart home and trust issues. Maybe unplug the speaker first.
