Maddie's Secret (2025)

Maddie’s Secret swings between a goofy satire of food-video culture and a sincere, painful drama, and some of those swings jolt hard. That’s also kind of the point. John Early writes, directs and plays Maddie, a dishwasher at Gourmaybe, an LA test kitchen that cranks out short cooking clips, who goes viral overnight after her husband Jake posts one of her vegetarian recipes. Suddenly she’s on camera, a rival chef named Emily turns icy, her pal Deena cheers her on, and producers from The Boar, a very familiar-sounding kitchen drama, start sniffing around. The attention digs up old insecurities, and Maddie starts keeping a secret from everyone. Early plays it all as full-hearted melodrama with zero irony, and that commitment is exactly why the serious stretches land. A dance class scene became a widely shared GIF, and you’ll see why. A 7.2 because it’s funny and sincere at the same time, which is hard. $5,518 says you call someone chef at least once this week and mean it as a compliment.

What works: John Early’s total commitment to earnest melodrama makes the satire funny and the serious moments genuinely moving.

What doesn’t: The jumps from broad food-video comedy to real pain are jarring, and some side characters stay cartoons.

Who it’s for: Fans of John Early’s comedy and anyone who loves big, earnest melodrama served without a wink.
