| Magnolia's Interests | |
| General | Quiz shows, rain, Valley freeways, hospice nurses, old regrets, a very long string of coincidences. |
| Music | Jon Brion on score, plus Aimee Mann songs that basically narrate the whole movie. |
| Movies | Short Cuts (1993). Robert Altman's Los Angeles mosaic, the obvious ancestor. |
| Television | Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Quiz shows were huge in 1999. This one hurts more. |
| Heroes | Officer Jim Kurring. Kind, clumsy, and genuinely trying his best. |

Magnolia gives nearly every character a full meltdown, and at 188 minutes it has time for all of them. That’s the problem and the point. Paul Thomas Anderson stacks emotional peaks on top of each other until your nerves beg for an intermission that never comes. Tom Cruise is the loudest thing in it, a swaggering self-help guru for angry, lonely men who prowls the stage like a rock star until a TV interview slowly takes him apart. It might be his best work ever. Philip Seymour Hoffman is the soul of the movie as a nurse on the phone, gently begging strangers to help a dying man. John C. Reilly’s lonely cop is so earnest it hurts. Late in the movie, the whole cast sings along to Wise Up, and it’s either genius or nuts depending on your mood. A 7.7 because the highs are huge and the movie never learned when to stop. $544 says you check how much is left at the halfway point, groan, and then refuse to turn it off.
What works: Tom Cruise’s swagger and collapse, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s tender nurse, and the fearless Wise Up sing-along.
What doesn’t: At 188 minutes it piles one emotional climax on another until it’s exhausting, and some storylines feel like they’re shouting over each other.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups with a free evening who love sprawling ensemble dramas and don’t mind being emotionally flattened.
Frogs rain from the sky over the whole Valley, interrupting nearly every character at their lowest moment, and the movie never explains it. Frank shows up at his dying father’s bedside after all, and Jim’s lost gun drops out of the sky right before he helps Donnie return the stolen money.
One rainy day in the San Fernando Valley, a dozen lives cross. Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is dying, and his nurse Phil Parma (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying to find someone from Earl's past. Quiz show host Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall) has bad news of his own, kid genius Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) is wilting under the studio lights, and former quiz kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) peaked decades ago. Lonely cop Jim Kurring (John C. Reilly) meets Claudia (Melora Walters), and self-help guru Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise) is very loud. Paul Thomas Anderson directs. One hundred eighty-eight minutes, and somehow it flies.
Anyone carrying around one big regret. Grab a seat, there's room.
