How Marty Supreme Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Marty Mauser lies, borrows, steals and sweet-talks his way through 149 minutes, and the movie mostly refuses to make him nicer. Josh Safdie piles on so many detours, a lost dog, a hustle at a bowling alley, a bathtub that crashes through a hotel floor, that the final stretch starts to feel random, and the heart of it stays chilly on purpose. Timothée Chalamet makes it work anyway. His Marty is a 1950s shoe salesman sure he’s the best table tennis player alive, and Chalamet plays him like a wind-up toy that never runs down. The matches are fast and tense. Odessa A’zion is a live wire as Rachel, and Kevin O’Leary is deliciously smug as a pen tycoon with money to burn. Orange novelty balls branded Marty Supreme are the funniest prop of the year. It made $192.4 million worldwide on a reported $60 to $70 million. An 8.4 because Chalamet is electric and the chaos rarely lets up. $7,427 says you find a ping-pong table this month and lose the first game while talking like a world champion.

What works: Timothée Chalamet gives a ferocious, funny performance, and Josh Safdie keeps the whole thing moving like a runaway taxi through 1950s New York.

What doesn’t: The detours pile up so fast that the last act feels random, and Marty is so selfish for so long that the movie can feel cold.

Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever been sure they were the best at something nobody else cared about.

Spoilers

Marty arrives in Tokyo too late to enter the World Championship and loses a staged exhibition to Koto Endo as planned. When the tycoon tries to humiliate him with a pig on stage, Marty exposes the setup and wins a real rematch, then flies home and breaks down in tears meeting his newborn child.

Marty Supreme's Blurbs
About me:

New York, 1952. Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) sells shoes for his uncle Murray (Larry "Ratso" Sloman), but shoes are not the plan. The plan is table tennis, starting with the British Open in London, which he fully intends to win. Getting there takes money he does not have and a few choices he really should not make. Once he lands, he books the Ritz like it's nothing and crosses paths with Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow). Josh Safdie directs at a full sprint. One hundred fifty minutes, and the paddle never cools off.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who thinks ping-pong is a basement game. Marty would like a word. Several words.
