Celine Song made a romance about a matchmaker who treats love like a spreadsheet, then asks you to choose a guy on pure feeling. Dakota Johnson’s Lucy, a former actress, now works for a New York matchmaking firm called Adore, rolling her eyes at clients’ impossible wish lists while privately writing off her own love life. Two options turn up at the ninth wedding she’s arranged: Pedro Pascal’s Harry, the groom’s wealthy brother, who wants a date and not a membership, and Chris Evans’s John, her broke actor ex, now carrying trays. The dialogue is sharp, and the jokes about dating as a market are meaner and funnier than you’d expect. The trouble is the second half. It loses steam, the tone wobbles, and some critics never bought Johnson and Evans as a couple. Rotten Tomatoes critics went 77% for it; regular viewers mostly shrugged. A 6.5 because it’s smart about money and love but short on spark. $27.19 says you grade your friends’ partners on a checklist during the drive home and swear you’re only kidding.
What works: Song’s dialogue is sharp, and the film’s view of dating as a marketplace is funny, adult and honest.
What doesn’t: The second half loses momentum, the tone keeps shifting, and the Johnson and Evans pairing never quite sparks.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups who want a romance that argues about rent and money, not just a cute meet.
Lucy and Harry split on friendly terms once she realizes they picked each other off a checklist. She ends up back with John, who proposes in Central Park with a ring made from a flower, and she says yes.
Lucy Mason (Dakota Johnson) works as a matchmaker at Adore in New York, and she is great at it. She knows exactly what every client wants on paper. Her own love life, she figures, is a lost cause. At a client's wedding, the groom's very rich brother, Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), skips the sign-up form and asks her out. That same night she bumps into her ex, John Pitts (Chris Evans), still acting, still broke, now working the catering. Celine Song writes and directs. One hundred seventeen minutes, two suitors, one very tough checklist.
Anyone with a dating checklist longer than their grocery list. Lucy can help. Probably.
