Jim Carrey punches himself in Me, Myself & Irene, one hand fighting the other, and it’s the single best piece of physical comedy in a movie that runs out of jokes way too early. At 116 minutes, it’s a sketch about a nice guy and his rude other half stretched past the breaking point. Carrey is fearless, flipping between the two personalities mid-sentence like somebody’s changing channels on his face. The problem is that the Farrellys have no idea what to do with anything else. The plot about a crooked cop and a framed witness is just an excuse to drive around upstate New York. The movie also treats a real mental illness like a punchline and gets the basics wrong. Charlie’s three genius sons, who adore their dad, are the best running joke, and Renée Zellweger is a game partner. It made $149.3 million worldwide on a reported $51M. A 4.2 because Carrey wrestling himself is worth seeing once and the rest is filler. $609 says you argue with yourself in the car this week and lose.
What works: Jim Carrey’s split-personality physical comedy is astonishing, and Charlie’s three sons are a sweet running joke.
What doesn’t: It’s way too long for its one idea, the crime plot is filler, and it treats mental illness as a cheap gag.
Who it’s for: Grown-up Jim Carrey completists who’ll sit through a lot for a few minutes of peak Carrey slapstick.
Charlie finally stands up for himself without needing Hank, and the crooked cops behind Irene’s trouble are stopped. Charlie and Irene end up together, with his sons right there with him.
Charlie Baileygates (Jim Carrey) is a Rhode Island state trooper so nice that the whole town walks all over him, while he raises three genius sons on his own. Years of swallowing every insult split him into a second personality, Hank, who says and does everything Charlie won't. Pills keep Hank quiet. Then Charlie is assigned to escort Irene Waters (Renée Zellweger) to upstate New York over a charge she swears her ex set up, the trip goes sideways, his pills get left behind and Hank is back. Peter and Bobby Farrelly direct. One hundred sixteen minutes, one Jim Carrey, two personalities.
People who can handle mood swings. Bring Charlie's prescription.
