Bong Joon Ho has one great idea here and a pile of other ideas elbowing it out of the room. The great one: a guy whose whole job is dying, then getting printed out again like a document nobody proofread. Robert Pattinson plays two Mickeys, a meek pushover and a short-fused copy who’s had enough, and they don’t even sound alike. Watching them bicker over who gets to exist is the best stuff in the movie. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette play the expedition’s ruling couple as grinning, dinner-obsessed cartoons, and the satire is about as subtle as a pie in the face. The Creepers, the planet’s big crawling locals, pull the last hour toward a creature feature. At 137 minutes, the jokes start repeating. Naomi Ackie’s Nasha is the sharpest person on the ship. It made $133.5 million worldwide on a reported $118M. A 6.4 because the clone comedy is gold and the rest is noise. $802 says you flub something at work this week and wish you could just print a fresh copy of yourself.
What works: Robert Pattinson’s double act as two very different Mickeys is funny, weird and oddly touching.
What doesn’t: The political satire is painfully broad, and at 137 minutes the story sprawls into a creature feature that loses the clone idea.
Who it’s for: Bong Joon Ho fans and anyone who wants big, strange sci-fi with a sense of humor.

Mickey 18 sacrifices himself to stop Marshall for good, and Mickey 17 helps broker peace with the Creepers. Nasha ends up running the colony and shuts down the Expendable program, and Mickey destroys the printer himself.
Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) needs to get off Earth fast, so he and his buddy Timo (Steven Yeun) sign on with a colony ship headed for the ice planet Niflheim. Mickey takes the worst job on board: Expendable. Every time a mission kills him, the ship prints a new Mickey with his memories intact. Then Mickey 17 is left for dead in an ice crevasse, makes it back anyway and finds Mickey 18 already printed. Expedition boss Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo) does not allow duplicates. Nasha (Naomi Ackie) is his girlfriend. Bong Joon Ho directs. One hundred thirty-seven minutes, at least two Robert Pattinsons.
