Parents, this one’s for you: the Minions were perfect in the corners of the frame, and dragging them into the center proves they have nothing to say. Literally. Kevin, Stuart and Bob speak a gibberish of half-words and food names, which is adorable for a scene and wearing by the third act. The opening, a speedrun through history with the Minions accidentally wrecking every boss they serve, is the best stretch. Then the plot shows up. Sandra Bullock’s Scarlet Overkill is a supervillain with a great name and a voice that never quite finds the joke, and Jon Hamm is having more fun as her groovy gadget husband. The story is a string of sketches with a crown in the middle. It made $1.16 billion worldwide on a reported $74M, which explains every lunchbox you’ve seen since. A 4.4 because a little Minion goes a long way and this is a lot of Minion. $243 says a kid near you shouts banana in a Minion voice this week and you join in without thinking.
What works: The history montage opening is a riot, and little Bob with his teddy bear is genuinely sweet.
What doesn’t: Sidekicks who speak gibberish can’t carry a whole plot, and Scarlet Overkill is a villain with a great name and no real jokes.
Who it’s for: Little kids, and the grown-ups who get outvoted on movie night.
Bob ends up briefly crowned king of England, and Scarlet’s plan to take the crown keeps falling apart. At the end young Gru freezes her with a ray gun and swipes the crown, and the Minions happily sign up with their new boss.
Since the dawn of time, the Minions have lived to serve the biggest villain around, and they keep accidentally losing the job. After years of moping in a cave with no boss, three volunteers step up: Kevin, Stuart and little Bob (all voiced by Pierre Coffin). Their search lands them in 1968 New York, then at Villain-Con in Orlando, where the world's first female supervillain, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), hires them on the spot. Her husband Herb (Jon Hamm) handles the gadgets. Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda direct. Ninety-one minutes, one banana at a time.
Anyone despicable enough to need three tiny assistants. Bananas are the signing bonus.
