If you haven’t watched the Amazon series, Mirzapur: The Movie will not slow down to catch you up, and it runs more than three hours anyway. It’s set in the middle of the show’s first season, and it feels like a whole season squeezed onto one screen, every subplot and rivalry still elbowing for room. The middle sags hard. Fans won’t mind. Pankaj Tripathi’s Kaleen Bhaiyya is still the calmest, scariest man in any room, needing big money for a political ally and handing the job to the Pandit brothers. Ali Fazal’s Guddu is all muscle and bodybuilding obsession, Jitendra Kumar’s Bablu is the brains, and Divyenndu’s Munna resents them both. Ravi Kishan plays Babban, the Jaisalmer rival offering a deal far too good to be true. The real Rajasthan locations give it a bigger canvas than the show, and the cast chemistry hasn’t faded. A 6.4 because the ensemble still crackles and the story could lose half an hour. $151 says you start calling the snack drawer at work your empire and guard it like Kaleen Bhaiyya.
What works: The ensemble’s chemistry is intact, and the Rajasthan locations give the franchise a bigger, earthier canvas.
What doesn’t: It’s badly overlong, the story is thin, and it leans on fan service so heavily that newcomers will be lost.
Who it’s for: Mirzapur fans who have rewatched the series and want one more ride with Kaleen Bhaiyya and the Pandit brothers.
Babban’s real plan is an ambush in the desert, but Guddu and Munna set their feud aside to rescue Kaleen Bhaiyya, and Babban doesn’t make it home. Kaleen praises Bablu’s deal but still won’t give the brothers their own territory, asking them to back Munna instead, and in the epilogue Beena makes the coldest move of all to protect her place.
Slotted inside season one of the Amazon show, this interquel finds Akhandanand Tripathi, aka Kaleen Bhaiyya (Pankaj Tripathi), needing serious money for a political ally's election campaign. Local suppliers have lined up against him, so he hands the job to brothers Guddu (Ali Fazal) and Bablu Pandit (Jitendra Kumar). Out in Jaisalmer, rival kingpin Babban Yadav (Ravi Kishan) dangles a deal that looks way too good, on one condition: Kaleen has to close it in person. Meanwhile Kaleen's son Munna (Divyenndu) is not thrilled about the brothers' rise. Gurmeet Singh directs. One hundred ninety-seven minutes, bring snacks.
Anyone who has finished season one. Twice.
