The best stunt in Rogue Nation happens before the opening title, which is a strange flex and a real problem. Cruise hangs off the side of a cargo plane as it takes off, and nothing afterward tops it. Lucky for everybody, the movie found Rebecca Ferguson. Her Ilsa Faust is the first person in this series who looks like she could beat Ethan in a fight and then outthink him over dinner. The Vienna opera sequence is pure old-school spy movie: snipers in the rafters, one huge aria, not a wasted shot. There’s an underwater vault, a motorcycle chase through Morocco and Simon Pegg doing his best panicked tourist. Sean Harris plays Lane like a whisper through a wall, creepy but kinda thin. Christopher McQuarrie keeps all 131 minutes tight. An 8.6 because it’s the best-built movie in the franchise, even if the opener steals its own thunder. $4,214 says you hold your breath along with Cruise in the underwater scene and tap out way before he does.
What works: Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust, the Vienna opera sequence, and a plot that actually holds together for once.
What doesn’t: The plane stunt is the peak and it happens first, and the villain is more creepy whisper than real threat.
Who it’s for: Spy fans who want an opera-house shootout and a motorcycle chase in the same movie.
Ilsa turns out to be a British agent whose own bosses left her out in the cold, and the Syndicate is a rogue project the British government started and lost control of. Ethan traps Lane in a bulletproof glass box, the same trick Lane used on him, and Hunley ends up running the IMF he tried to shut down.
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) opens the movie hanging off the side of a cargo plane as it takes off, and that's just the warm-up. In Washington, CIA director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) convinces the Senate to shut down the IMF for good. Ethan, now on the run, is chasing the Syndicate, a secret network of rogue spies nobody believes exists. Benji (Simon Pegg) and Brandt (Jeremy Renner) are stuck at desk jobs, Luther (Ving Rhames) is retired, and a mysterious agent named Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) keeps turning up on whichever side suits her. Christopher McQuarrie directs. One hundred thirty-one minutes, and yes, Cruise really did that plane stunt.
Anyone who can hold their breath for a very long time. It comes up.
