Moneyball is a sports movie about a guy who can’t stand to watch his own team play. Billy Beane paces the empty clubhouse and drives around with the radio on while the games happen without him, and Brad Pitt makes all that nervous energy look like a full-time job. Jonah Hill plays Peter Brand like a calculator that learned to apologize. The two of them in a cramped office deciding who to cut is better drama than most playoff games, and the trade deadline phone scene plays like a heist. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Art Howe sulks so hard you can feel the dugout get colder. The catch: this is a baseball movie with barely any baseball, so anybody who came for big-game thrills will be checking the clock somewhere in the 133 minutes. It made $113.7 million worldwide on a reported $50M budget, which is a very Billy Beane return. An 8.8 because it makes arguing about numbers feel like a thriller. $86 says you open a spreadsheet for your fantasy league before the credits finish.
What works: Pitt and Hill’s odd-couple chemistry, the trade deadline phone scene, and the way it turns roster math into real tension.
What doesn’t: There’s barely any actual baseball on screen, and the back half slows down when it leaves the front office.
Who it’s for: People who care more about the front office than the field, and anyone who has been told their idea will never work.
The A’s go on a huge winning streak, then lose in the playoffs again. Billy turns down a massive offer from the Boston Red Sox to stay in Oakland, and the closing text notes that Boston won it all a couple of years later using his ideas.
Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) runs the Oakland A's, and his best players just got poached by teams with way more money. Doing it the old scouting way won't work on his budget. On a trip to Cleveland he meets Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), a quiet Yale economics grad who judges players with spreadsheets instead of gut feelings. Billy hires him. Together they build a roster out of guys every other team passed on, like a catcher who has never played first base. The scouts hate it. Manager Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman) hates it more. Bennett Miller directs. One hundred thirty-three minutes, zero gut feelings allowed.
Anyone ever told their spreadsheet has no heart. Bring on-base percentage.
