A ghost made of red fabric is the monster in Mother Mary, and the only person who can deal with it is the ex who used to make her dresses. David Lowery plays that completely straight, and for long stretches the movie is so vague and so pleased with its own mood that it’s hard to tell what anyone wants. Anne Hathaway is the reason to show up. She’s believable as a world-famous pop star with a comeback show just days away, and the concert scenes have real swagger. Michaela Coel plays Sam, the designer who helped launch Mary’s career and then got cut out, and she’s in no mood to forgive. Their scenes in Sam’s barn workshop, where Mary has to perform her choreography with no music, are the strongest thing here. The rest drifts. It made $2.6 million domestically on a reported $20M. A 5.3 because Hathaway sells the star and the movie never sells the story. $71.91 says you eye the red sweater in your closet tonight and decide it can stay in the drawer.
What works: Anne Hathaway is completely convincing as a global pop star, and the film has style to burn, from the concert staging to the barn workshop.
What doesn’t: The story stays so vague and self-serious that the ghost, the history and the stakes all blur together, and the middle feels like a slog.
Who it’s for: Fans of arty, moody pop-star dramas who don’t need a story to explain itself.
The red ghost has been living inside Mary since her onstage accident, and Sam leads a ritual with her dressmaking tools that draws it out and turns it into harmless cloth. Mary apologizes to Sam, makes it to the show and dedicates her song to her, while Sam turns the red fabric into the dress.
Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) is a world-famous pop star three days out from a comeback show, her first since an accident on stage. A costume fitting goes sideways, so she bolts to the English countryside to find Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel), the designer who was once her closest creative partner and her ex. The two have history, and not all of it is good. Sam agrees, reluctantly, to make her one dress. Hunter Schafer plays Sam's assistant Hilda. David Lowery writes and directs. One hundred twelve minutes, one very loaded fitting.
Designers on a deadline. Bring pins and patience.
