A cargo ship is a terrible place to hide Jason Statham, and Mutiny spends 95 minutes proving it. Cole Reed, a bodyguard framed for his billionaire boss’s murder in Bangkok, borrows a dead hit man’s identity to sneak aboard the Artemis, and the plot from there is a knot of shipping company schemes, a shaky heir and a buyout nobody in the audience cares about. The tone is unrelentingly grim, and the story twists itself up so much you’ll stop tracking who works for whom. The fights, though, are crunchy and close, which is Statham’s whole job, and he does it like a craftsman punching a time clock. A showdown with the ship’s captain involving a harpoon gun is the highlight. Annabelle Wallis plays Angie, a company employee who helps him uncover the hostages hidden on board. Critics gave it 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 4.3 because the punches land and the story sinks. $20.85 says you spot a cargo ship this year and squint at it like Statham might climb out of a container any second.
What works: The close-quarters fights are brutal and well staged, and Statham remains a total pro at making every punch look like it hurts.
What doesn’t: The corporate conspiracy plot is convoluted and the tone is so grim from start to finish that the fun drains right out.
Who it’s for: Statham completists who want ninety-five minutes of shipboard brawling and don’t need the plot to make sense.
Angie tells the arriving Navy ship that Reed died and went overboard, which lets him vanish. He heads back to Thailand, confronts Tibu’s son Kameron at the funeral, and tracks down Jaran Daniles, the rival who ordered the hit, for a final reckoning.
Cole Reed (Jason Statham) used to be a cop and a commando. Now he is the bodyguard for Tibu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram), a shipping billionaire in Bangkok. One night the two get ambushed, Tibu does not make it, and Reed is framed for it. His friend Taran (Jason Wong) hears the hit men are boarding one of the company's cargo ships, the Artemis, so Reed takes one of their identities and gets on too. Out at sea he crosses paths with Angie Ellis (Annabelle Wallis) and the ship's captain, Marko Madsen (Roland Møller). Jean-François Richet directs. Ninety-five minutes, one long boat ride.
Anyone who gets seasick just watching. Statham does not.
