A mob boss who is a dead ringer for All Might is the villain of My Hero Academia: You’re Next, and the real All Might barely gets a say in it. Valdo, head of the Gollini crime family, watched All Might’s last stand and decided the Symbol of Peace job was open. So he arrives on a flying yacht, absorbs everything around him, students and all, turns the yacht into a massive fortress and starts calling himself Dark Might. Deku ends up cut off from his class with his Quirk switched off, teaming with Giulio, a gruff guy with a mechanical arm, to rescue Anna, a girl whose touch supercharges some people and hurts others. The fights are gorgeous and easy to follow, and one villain who slows time with bubbles is a treat. The story is thin, and the stakes feel small. It scored 95% with critics and made $32.2 million worldwide. A 6.7 because the animation flies higher than the plot. $292.53 says you walk out flexing your hand like your Quirk might finally kick in.
What works: The animation and battle choreography are top tier, and the Quirk combos in the finale are a blast.
What doesn’t: The plot is thin, the new characters stay sketchy, and the real All Might is left on the sidelines when the story begs for him.
Who it’s for: My Hero Academia fans who want a big-screen side adventure packed with Class 1-A action.
Deku, Bakugo and Todoroki take down Dark Might together, and Deku’s biggest Smash brings the fortress crashing down. Anna’s power finally overloads against Giulio’s, leaving her Quirkless and free, and she talks him into staying with her. A last scene teases that All For One is still out there.
After the Paranormal Liberation War, Class 1-A of U.A. is out rounding up the villains who slipped away. Izuku Midoriya (Daiki Yamashita) runs into a girl named Anna Scervino (Meru Nukumi) who is in serious trouble, right as a flying yacht drops in carrying the Gollini crime family. Their boss Valdo (Kenta Miyake) looks exactly like All Might, swallows the whole area, Class 1-A included, into a giant fortress, and names himself Dark Might, the new Symbol of Peace. Katsuki Bakugo (Nobuhiko Okamoto) and Shoto Todoroki (Yuki Kaji) are in the mix too. Tensai Okamura directs. One hundred ten minutes, one very suspicious All Might cosplay.
Anyone with a Quirk and a free afternoon. Bring your own hero name.
