My Old Ass (2024)

Aubrey Plaza is the big name that sells My Old Ass, and she spends most of it as a voice on the other end of a phone. Good news: Maisy Stella doesn’t need the help. She plays Elliott, who has three summer weeks left at home on a cranberry farm in Ontario before university in Toronto, and fills them with boat rides with Ro and Ruthie, farm chores and Chelsea, the girl she’s liked since grade eight. Then, on her 18th birthday night, she meets herself at 39, and the older model has notes. Treasure the farm. Spend time with your family. And whatever you do, avoid a boy named Chad. Naturally, Chad turns out to be sweet. Stella has comic timing you can’t teach, and Plaza’s dry delivery bounces perfectly off her sunny chaos. The lake scenes glow. Critics gave it 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 7.8 because it’s funny, warm and leaves you a little teary. $32.42 says you text your own number a warning tonight, just in case it reaches you in 20 years.

What works: Maisy Stella is a natural lead with great timing, and the Muskoka lakes setting gives the whole thing a warm, end-of-summer glow.

What doesn’t: Aubrey Plaza is mostly a phone call, and the big hook about who she is gets fewer scenes than you’d want.

Who it’s for: Anyone about to leave home, anyone who already did, and fans of coming-of-age comedies with a lump in the throat.
