Ben Gates corners the President of the United States at his own birthday party to ask him about a book, and the movie treats this like a fun Tuesday. That’s Book of Secrets in one move: louder, sillier and more pleased with itself than the first one. The clue chain runs from Paris to London to the Oval Office, and the logic gets thinner at every stop. Nicolas Cage sells it anyway, rattling off history trivia like a man who’s waited all year for someone to ask. Justin Bartha’s Riley, now an author whose book nobody bought, gets the best lines. Helen Mirren joins as Ben’s mom and trades icy barbs with Jon Voight, which is honestly a better movie than the treasure hunt. Critics gave it 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it still made $459.2 million worldwide on a reported $130M. A 5.2 because the puzzles are dumb fun and nobody involved ever checks the map. $70.02 says you knock on the next antique desk you walk past, listening for a hidden drawer.
What works: Cage’s history-nerd energy is contagious, and Helen Mirren and Jon Voight bickering is the most fun the sequel has.
What doesn’t: The clue chain is pure hand-waving, every puzzle gets solved in seconds, and the stakes never feel real.
Who it’s for: Families who loved the first one and want another rainy-day treasure hunt with zero homework.
The trail ends at a lost city of gold hidden under Mount Rushmore. Mitch Wilkinson stays behind holding back the flooding cave so the others can escape, and Thomas Gates’s name is cleared. The President leaves Ben with a teaser about another secret in the book that the movie never explains.
Treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) is telling a crowd about his family history when a dealer named Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) produces a missing page from John Wilkes Booth's diary. It lists Ben's ancestor Thomas Gates as a conspirator in Lincoln's assassination. To clear the family name, Ben recruits his dad Patrick (Jon Voight), his buddy Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and his ex Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger), and the clues send them from Paris to a very old desk inside Buckingham Palace. Jon Turteltaub directs. One hundred twenty-four minutes, zero respect for museum rules.
History nerds who never return a library book. Bring a magnifying glass and a passport.
