Never Let Go has one great rule, a rope tying you to the house every time you step outside, and then it asks you to let go of your expectations, a bold request from a movie with this title. Halle Berry plays Momma, raising twins Nolan and Sam in a remote forest cabin on one story: something called the Evil took the rest of the world, and only they are left. They forage on tethers. They say a daily thank-you to the house itself. Only Momma can see the Evil, and the boys believe her, until a brutal winter empties the pantry and Nolan starts to doubt. Berry is fully committed, and the early dread is real. Then Alexandre Aja stacks up turns and the logic frays. Critics split at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, and opening crowds gave it a C+ CinemaScore. A 4.8 because the first half holds tight and the second half unravels. $61.76 says you thank your front door on the way out tomorrow, as a joke, and then feel strange about it.
What works: Halle Berry throws herself into Momma, and the early stretch builds genuine dread out of one simple rule about ropes.
What doesn’t: The second half piles on turn after turn and asks you to drop a lot of storytelling logic just to keep up.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who like isolated-cabin dread and a big, committed central performance.
The Evil may live only in Momma’s mind, and after the boys lose her, the brothers turn on each other and the cabin burns down. A rescue helicopter reveals the rest of the world was fine all along, and the last Polaroid hints the Evil has followed Sam.
Deep in a huge forest, a woman her sons call Momma (Halle Berry) raises twins Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) in a lonely cabin. She's told them a force called the Evil has spread across the world and the three of them are all that's left. The house rules are simple: any time you step outside, you tie a rope around yourself and keep it tied to the house. The boys even thank the house every day for keeping them safe. Momma sees things the boys can't, and they take her word for it. Alexandre Aja directs. One hundred one minutes, hold on tight.
Anyone who double-knots everything. Bring your own rope.
