Zombies made of jelly are the big idea in Night of the Zoopocalypse, which is the whole point and also the catch. A meteor crashes into the petting zoo at Colepepper Zoo, a pink bunny takes a nibble, and soon the park is crawling with gooey, wobbly Gum-Beasts. Gracie, a young wolf raised by a grandmother who drills the pack for disasters, gets stuck teaming up with Dan, a grumpy mountain lion voiced by David Harbour who only wants out. The sidekicks are the best part: a movie-obsessed lemur, a vain proboscis monkey, a capybara with attitude and a sarcastic ostrich. It’s bright and neon and spooky in small doses, a decent first horror movie for little kids. The plot, though, is the grump-meets-kid team-up you’ve seen many times. Critics were at 88% while everyday viewers shrugged. A 5.8 because it works as a cute gateway scare and not much more. $4,702 says the next jiggly dessert at your table gets called a Gum-Beast.
What works: The sidekick animals are funny, the neon look pops, and the scares are gentle enough for young kids.
What doesn’t: The grumpy-loner-meets-eager-kid story is extremely familiar, and grown-ups will be a step ahead of nearly every beat.
Who it’s for: Young kids ready for their first zombie movie, and parents who would rather the zombies be made of jelly.
Gracie figures out that the zoo’s theme song is the cure after a snow globe music box snaps a baby hippo back to normal. She switches on the clock tower, the music breaks up the giant Gum-Beast blob, and Dan heads for the wild but leaves her the key.
Gracie (Gabbi Kosmidis) is a young timber wolf at Colepepper Zoo, raised by Gramma Abigale (Carolyn Scott), who drills the pack for disasters and trusts no other animal. Then a meteor crashes into the petting zoo one night, a pink bunny takes a bite of space rock, and soon a gooey zombie outbreak is spreading through the park. Gracie teams up with Dan (David Harbour), a grumpy new mountain lion who wants out, plus a movie-buff lemur, a vain proboscis monkey named Felix (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), a capybara and a sarcastic ostrich named Ash (Scott Thompson). Rodrigo Perez-Castro and Ricardo Curtis direct. Ninety-two minutes, no petting allowed.
Anyone with a zombie plan. Gramma Abigale already has three.
